What you should do following a construction accident

Construction accidents are avoidable if everyone on the site takes the proper precautions. There are times when accidents happen even when the proper safety precautions are taken and the proper protective equipment is worn. Here are some important tips for what you should do following a construction accident in Illinois.

The first thing you must do following a construction accident is to notify a superior immediately. A written report of the accident should be documented and sent through the proper channels at the company and to the authorities. Never admit fault to anyone on the construction site, even if the accident was your fault. This can hinder any legal action you wish to take.

Accept any and all medical attention following the accident, especially on-site where it occurred, but be sure you receive independent medical attention too. This should be done by your family physician or another doctor whom you trust.

Make sure you receive copies of all documents created in response to the accident. These documents could prove very helpful if you decide to pursue a claim against the company where you worked or the owner of the job site. These documents should include accident reports, medical reports, x-rays, surgery reports and any other document created as part of the case.

Do not agree to a settlement your employer or the site owner offers you. This is done simply to avoid a lawsuit or court appearance of any kind. A settlement might seem like a good idea at first, but it's possible you could receive a higher amount for your injuries and pain should you go the route of filing a lawsuit for the accident.

Speak with a trusted attorney prior to making any decisions regarding the incident. It's a good idea to refrain from speaking to anyone except for an attorney about the incident to ensure you don't say anything that could hurt your case.

If you have been injured in a construction accident, contact our Aurora, Illinois, firm to discuss the injury and find out how you can be compensated for your pain.
