Child killed in suspected DUI accident

Two young girls, ages 7 and and 5, were riding with a 25-year-old woman when she was involved in a car accident.

The crash happened just before 7:00 a.m., but police believe that the driver was already under the influence of drugs and/or alcohol. They claim that the Chevy Cruze that the three were in crossed into the oncoming lane and slammed into a Mazda SUV that was coming the opposite direction.

At least one of the children was not buckled in. She was 7 years old. The emergency crews rushed her to OSF Healthcare Children's Hospital of Illinois with critical injuries. Just after 8:30 a.m., medical staff determined that she was officially brain dead and had passed away.

The other child is 5 years old. Though reports also show that her injuries were critical, she did survive the accident. Details on the exact nature of her injuries were not available.

Police did report that the driver had a booster seat in the Cruze, but that she only had one. They also said she did not reduce her speed to stop the crash from happening and that she was driving in the wrong lane. Authorities said that responding officers could smell alcohol when they got to the crash site, and they were running toxicology tests to see if she had been using any other types of drugs. She is facing numerous charges, but authorities are waiting for the results of those tests to find out if there will be any more.

Accidents take lives every day. Tragically, many who are killed are children. It's important for family members to know what legal rights they have after such a crash.
