A construction site in suburban Chicago turned deadly earlier this month when a steel beam fell some 30 feet and struck two workers. A 55-year-old man died and his 27-year-old co-worker was critically injured.
The accident took place in Evanston, where crews were working on a nine-story apartment building. They were unloading steel beams when the rigging on the crane they were using failed, causing one of the beams to drop.
The medical examiner’s office in Cook County attributed the older man’s death to multiple injuries. He was from Compton, Illinois, which is in the north-central part of the state. He was employed by Area Erectors Inc., which is based in Chicago.
The crane operator had to be brought down from his position by members of the Evanston Fire Department. He was approximately 130 feet above the ground at the time of the incident. However, neither he nor anyone else reportedly suffered any injuries.
As anyone who works in construction or has a loved one who does knows, it’s one of the most dangerous professions there is. The amount of heavy materials and the heights at which people work create the potential for severe, and too often, fatal accidents.
If you or a loved one has suffered injuries or worse in a construction accident, it’s essential to make sure that a thorough investigation is carried out and that all responsible parties are identified. This can help you and your attorney determine who can and should be held liable so that you can get the compensation you need for medical expenses, lost wages and other damages.
