What is the trucking log and why is it important?

The trucking industry is one of the most important industries when it comes to the health of our country’s economy. The more trucks you see on the roads, the healthier the economy. Trucks can also pose a dangerous risk when on the roads because of their size and time it takes for them to come to a complete stop. Trucking logs are required by drivers to complete for various reasons.

The Federal Highway Traffic Safety Administration (FHTSA) requires truck drivers to complete a truck log each time they head out on a run. Drivers are also required to take a reset between the hours of 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. The law also states that truck drivers must take breaks when they drive for eight hours or more. All of these laws are in place in an effort to reduce the number of accidents caused by truck drivers who might be tired or falling asleep at the wheel due to their long trips.

For the longest time, the truck log was kept by the driver in an official book that was supplied by the trucking company. The log records a host of information that must be provided honestly and accurately by the driver of the truck. That information include operating time, down time, rest time and breaks. These logs can be audited at any time by the FHTSA. If mistakes are found, even minor mistakes that are honest, the driver and employer could face fines and penalties.

Trucking logs are very important to personal injury attorneys in Illinois because they can help prove fault or fraud in an accident case. If your lawyer is able to show that the log was altered, or false information was entered, it could lead to the case being won easily.

Being involved in a truck accident in Aurora, Illinois, does not have to put you in a bad situation. An experienced personal injury attorney can explain your rights and help you acquire compensation for the injuries you suffered.
