Motorcyclists face a lot of risks on America’s roads, and it’s important to do what we can to keep them safe. There are many ways to do this: training riders, educating drivers, considering road layouts and establishing safety laws and regulations.
Not to be overlooked, though, is the role that manufacturers play in this process. They can take steps to make safer bikes, and one report said they need to:
- Add enhancing braking to more bikes
- Work toward widespread availability of stability control systems
These two technologies can really cut back on accident risks, and they’ve been shown to work when they are used. They’re not implemented on all bikes, though, so some riders will face unneeded risks.
“The recommendations made in this report are designed to improve detection of motorcycles in traffic and give motorcycle riders more time to react to dangerous conditions,” noted the chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).
To that end, they also advised making changes to the technologies used in passenger vehicles to help them better share the road with motorcycles. They noted that accident prevention systems and crash warning systems should be designed to work more effectively with bikes, not just with other cars.
“Passenger-vehicle based crash warning and prevention systems and connected vehicle technologies have the potential to enhance motorcycle safety by improving motorcycle conspicuity, but these systems are not consistently designed to detect or integrate motorcycles,” the NTSB chairman said.
It is clear that safety is something that involves everyone: riders, drivers, passengers and government bodies. Unfortunately, getting to the point where riding is perfectly safe may never be possible.
