Car crash victims often suffer from hidden injuries

On any given day, most of us drive a vehicle or ride in one at some point. Between commuting to work, transporting children to school and other activities, and running essential errands, most of us may experience a car accident at any time. When car accidents occur, the victims may not know exactly how to respond, and may overlook injuries that do not cause pain or present visible symptoms like bleeding, broken bones or bruising.

Delayed-onset injuries may not cause any pain for a few hours, or even several days, in some instances. This is precisely why all victims of car accidents should receive a complete medical examination from a qualified medical professional as soon as possible. Without a complete medical examination, victims may not realize that they have injuries at all, allowing the injuries to get worse before they cause pain or harm the victim in some way. A complete medical examination can find hidden injuries and help a victim seek the treatment they need, keeping their best interests protected during their recovery.

Deadly delayed-onset injuries

All delayed-onset injuries are dangerous or harmful in some way, but only a few are potentially fatal to victims. Deadly delayed-onset injuries typically include internal organ damage and internal bleeding. Organs that suffer damage in a car accident may keep functioning for a time while the victim's body attempts to heal the injury through natural processes. In some cases, the organ may heal sufficiently and the victim may never realize the injury occurred. However, if the organ does not heal, it will eventually fail, leading to more organs failing and shutting down the victim's entire body. This is both deadly and painful.

Internal bleeding is not always painful, but if a victim loses too much blood from their circulatory system, they will lose consciousness and never wake up. This may make it seem as though very small instances of internal bleeding are not too dangerous, but small internal injuries pose a completely different threat. Minor internal wounds are not easy to find and treat, and they may easily grow infected. If an internal wound grows too infected without any treatment, the infection can spread to other parts of the body through the circulation system, causing sepsis to set in. Like organ failure, sepsis is also a painful way to die.

Other delayed pain injuries

Other delayed pain injuries are not necessarily deadly, but can significantly impact the victim's quality of life. These include damage to nerves, soft-tissue damage and spinal cord damage. If the victim receives a blow to their head in an accident, they may suffer a brain injury that can seriously alter their personality, and ability to focus and handle frustration.

If you are a car accident survivor, you owe it to yourself to seek a full medical examination from your doctor. If you do find injuries after a car accident, your examination and the medical documentation from it can help you build a strong legal strategy for pursuing full compensation and protecting your rights while you recover.
