Work zone car accidents are very dangerous for everyone involved: Drivers, passengers, workers and pedestrians. Work zones often cause backups and delays, and this can then lead to serious accidents. In some cases, workers themselves cause accidents while using trucks, cars and heavy machinery.
To get an idea of how dangerous this is, let’s take a look at some of the work zone car accident statistics in Illinois. The following stats are from the 2018 report:
- There were 6,249 total work zone crashes
- A total of 1,134 of those accidents resulted in injuries
- In those 1,134 injury crashes, 1,625 people suffered reported injuries
- There were 17 fatal accidents. One person passed away in each accident, for a total of 17 lives lost during the year.
As you can see, injuries are far more common than deaths, but both do happen. It is also important to note that workers may be the ones facing the greatest risk of death in these crashes. They often have very little protection or none at all. Their safety gear — such as reflective vests — is designed to prevent a crash, but it does not help them when the accident occurs. It’s a threat that they face with every job, on both rural roads and urban streets.
Have you gotten injured in one of these accidents? Has it left you with high medical bills and lost wages? Are you unsure if you will ever be able to work in your chosen profession again? Make sure you are well aware of the legal options you have.
