If you’re trying to decide just how safe it is to ride a motorcycle, you may want to take a look at the fatality statistics. They can show you if riding a bike is more or less dangerous than other things you do on a daily basis.
Below are five potentially deadly activities, ranked in order:
1. Suffering preventable medical errors.
Medical mistakes take around 98,000 lives every year, according to some studies. Mistakes could include things like giving a patient medication that he or she is allergic to or fatally injuring a patient during surgery.
2. Drinking too much.
Even without driving, drinking can be dangerous. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention note that alcohol poisoning took 25,692 lives in 2010.
3. Falling.
Falls take about 25,000 lives every year. While that may sound simple, keep in mind that many are falls from heights, such as those in the construction industry.
4. Texting and driving.
The exact numbers are hard to pin down, but one study estimated that 7,247 people died due to texting and driving in a single year.
5. Riding a motorcycle.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notes that, back in 2012, a total of 4,957 motorcyclists died in accidents.
As you can see, there are many activities that take more lives than riding a motorcycle, though there is one important point to consider: exposure. For example, far more people drink alcohol than ride bikes, so the risk level is higher and helps explain the higher totals.
That being said, this list also shows that there are hundreds of serious motorcycle accidents every month. If you’re hurt or a loved one is killed, be sure you know what legal rights you have.
