It’s easy to assume that you know the ins and outs of distracted driving, but you could soon come to find that you’re making a basic mistake that puts you and everyone else on the road at risk of an accident.
Distracted driving takes on many forms, all of which are dangerous. Here are five examples:
Texting: This is the most talked about type of distracted driving. With texting so popular in today’s world, many people can’t put their phone down while they’re behind the wheel.
Talking on the phone: Before texting hit the mainstream, this was the most talked about form of distracted driving. However, it’s still a major concern, as it can take your attention away from the road. If you must talk while driving, use a hands free device. This allows you to keep both hands on the wheel.
Eating and drinking: When you eat and/or drink while driving, your attention isn’t on the road. Plus, you’ll find that you can only have one hand on the wheel, at the most.
Smoking: Many people smoke while driving, never realizing that it takes their attention away from the road and a hand off the steering wheel.
Conversing with passengers: Unless you’re driving alone, there’s always a temptation to converse with passengers, such as your spouse who’s sitting shotgun or your children in the backseat. It’s okay to talk, but you don’t want to become so immersed in the conversation that it pulls your attention away from the road. If a passenger is distracting you, don’t hesitate to ask them to stop. It’s better than taking a risk with the safety of everyone in your vehicle.
The next time you get behind the wheel, pay close attention to every move you make. You may find that one or more of these distractions is hindering your ability to stay safe.
While you’re doing that, keep an eye out for other drivers who are distracted. If you see someone who’s not paying attention to the road, create space as to reduce the risk of an accident.
And if an accident does happen, move to safety, call for help, obtain medical treatment and then take steps to protect your legal rights.
