Daylight saving time: How to stay safe after the time change
People in Illinois and across the country turned back their clocks on Nov. 1 at 2 a.m. For many, this is a welcome change as people are able to gain an hour of extra sleep. However, it is this sudden change to our sleeping pattern that leads to an increase in motor vehicle accidents. Here’s how to safely navigate the days after daylight saving time.
One of the most immediate hazards that you’re going to face is driving in the dark. During the summer months, most people leave and come back from work or school with enough sunlight to safely see any road hazards. However, after the time has changed, you’re likely to leave and come back with almost no daylight. This can lead to an increase in auto accidents as drivers may not be accustomed to the change in light and weather conditions. The best way to avoid finding yourself in a dangerous situation is to keep a strict sleeping schedule, which can allow you to have ample time in the morning and not have to rush.
The winter months are just around the corner, which means that it may take a little longer to get in your car and start driving. Taking the proper precautions before those months roll in is your best option to ensure your safety and efficiency after daylight saving time. It is recommended to replace your windshield wipers, add an emergency winter kit and even take your car in for a quick tune-up.
Taking proper safety precautions is a great way to decrease the chances that you’ll be involved in a car accident. However, this does not mean that you can entirely prevent a collision. It may be helpful to have an experience personal injury attorney at the ready in the unfortunate event that you are involved in an accident.
