Nothing but time helps with drunk driving
The unfortunate reality is that some drunk drivers think they did enough to get sober when they actually didn’t. They just followed some common myths and put everyone in danger.
A cold shower does not make you sober. Neither does a cup of coffee.
The only thing that actually helps you is time. Your body can break down one drink every hour. This means that, as soon as you get done drinking, your blood alcohol concentration (BAC) falls by about .015 percent in the next 60 minutes. You can’t rush it. That’s just the rate that you’re stuck with.
So, if your BAC is at .12 percent, which is over the legal limit of .08 percent, drinking a cup of coffee for a half an hour isn’t going to magically get you back under the .08 percent threshold. It’s not going to make you safe or “sober you up.” That half hour itself helps the most, but it’s not enough.
Experts warn that many common myths can change how you feel, but they don’t actually change impairment. If you felt tired at the bar before your cup of coffee, the caffeine may give you an energy boost so that you feel awake. You mistake that as being sober, but it’s not the same thing. Now you’re just drunk and awake, rather than drunk and tired.
Learning that these myths do not work is a good first step, but even that can’t keep you safe when others choose to drive drunk. If you get hurt in an accident that they cause, make sure you know how to seek financial compensation.
