Rural roads pose unique dangers
Often, when people get away from the Chicago area and take to Illinois’ many rural roads, they let their guard down. Rural roads somehow feel safer than navigating the interstates in and around Chicagoland. However, they carry their own unique dangers that drivers need to be aware of.
One danger of rural roads is that drivers get complacent on them. They don’t have vehicles surrounding them every moment, so they let their guard down and don’t remain attentive to their surroundings. They may ignore speed limits. It’s easy to go faster than you realize when there’s no traffic around you.
Drivers too often ignore more than speed limits on rural roads. They may ignore other laws. Sometimes, drivers and passengers don’t even bother with seat belts on rural roads. Drivers may even break open a beer while they’re cruising along, which is not only illegal but extremely dangerous.
Rural roads may take you through some of the most beautiful areas of the state. However, these routes may be narrow and winding. Some roads may be in bad shape — particularly after a brutal winter. To make things more dangerous, many rural roads are not well-lit or have no lights at all.
Finally, critters of all types abound throughout the rural areas of Illinois and Wisconsin. You’re driving through their homes, and they can dart out into the road at any moment. Deer and other wild animals don’t always cross at “deer crossing” signs!
If you’re involved in a crash on a rural road, another danger is that it can take first responders some time to get there. Therefore, people who suffer injuries may not receive medical treatment in a timely manner.
If you’ve suffered an injury due to another driver’s negligence or actions, an Illinois automobile accident attorney can help you seek the compensation that you need for medical bills, lost income and other financial needs as you recover.
