If you have never been in a car accident, the chances are high that you will be one day. The more you drive, the more likely a collision is. Hopefully, if it does happen to you, it will be a small bump, not a major accident.
While you cannot predict an accident, you can prepare by knowing what to do if it does happen:
Never say it was your fault: Even if you believe it was, do not say so. Do not even say sorry. If you do, the insurance company may use this to reduce any money they need to pay you, leaving you out of pocket.
Call 911: The emergency services will come and deal with injured people and complete the accident report. Make sure you wait until the police arrive, even if you feel fine. Leaving the scene of an accident could get you in legal trouble.
Get out of danger: If you can quickly shift your car to the side of the road, do so to protect yourself and other drivers. If not, leave the car and get yourself to safety. Standing dazed in the middle of the road is dangerous.
Exchange details: The law requires you and the other driver to swap information.
Once you get home, call your insurance company and seek legal help. Remember that insurance companies are not your friends. If you have suffered a personal injury, insurance companies will try to limit how much they pay you. An attorney can fight for the compensation you are entitled to.
