Many Illinois motorcyclists put their bikes away in the garage for the winter. Others can’t bear to give them up for even a few months. If you plan to ride this winter, you need to take some extra precautions to stay safe.
Check your tires
Make sure that your tires will grip the road when it’s wet and icy. You need good tread on your tires. Cold weather can lessen traction. Also, check your tire pressure regularly.
Increase your visibility
This is always essential, but never more so than in the winter. Keep your lights on, even in the daylight. Wear reflective clothing. Stay out of drivers’ blind spots.
Speaking of gear, wear several layers of heavy clothing to protect against frostbite. Keep covered from head to toe. Synthetic materials are better at keeping moisture away from your body than natural fabrics like cotton.
Watch out for potholes and other road hazards
Potholes can easily get covered by a layer of snow or residual fallen leaves. Running over even a relatively small pothole can send you and your bike flying. Watch out for ice as well as salt that’s been poured over it to melt it.
Even some native Illinoisans have problems driving safely in winter weather. No matter how careful you are on your motorcycle, you may become the victim of one of these negligent or reckless drivers.
If you or a loved one suffers injuries in a motorcycle accident caused by the driver of a car or larger vehicle, it’s wise to explore all of your options for seeking the compensation you need and deserve as you heal.
