As we recently discussed, construction workers whose jobs put them on Illinois interstates and expressways are at considerable risk of injury by negligent, reckless and impaired motorists. Recently, some Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) workers actually detained an alleged drunk driver until Illinois State Police (ISP) could get to him.
The incident happened on Sept. 19 in a work zone on Interstate 255 near Dupo. According to an ISP trooper, the driver crashed his pickup truck into some construction barrels that had been placed in the work zone by IDOT workers and then pulled his truck over on the shoulder of the road.
The trooper says that when IDOT workers approached him to see if he needed help, they witnessed him using drugs. One worker quickly moved a large piece of equipment called a Bobcat over to block the man from leaving when he attempted to flee the scene. A worker then called 911.
Less than a week later, this same work zone was the site of a crash that injured two truck drivers. On Sept. 24, a semi-truck in the northbound lane of I-255 crashed into an attenuator truck that was moving along with workers repaving the shoulders of the road prior to the installation of rumble strips. That truck was there to protect the workers. The semi-truck driver claimed that he didn’t see them.
If you or a loved one has suffered injuries while working on a construction site, whether on or in a building, along one of Illinois’ busy roadways or elsewhere, it’s essential to explore all of your options for compensation to provide you and your family with the financial resources you need during this challenging time.
